The Man of the UN

Yesterday afternoon, upon our request, Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad visited our school to give a short talk on his past experience in the UN.

Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad is a Malaysian journalist, politician, a one time editor-in-chief of the News Straits Times newspaper and former Ambassador to the UN.

He gave a one-hour talk on his experience working in the UN, his survival during the years he was detained in the ISA, facts and events that have happened during his time as a Malaysian Ambassador to the UN and life in general. His opinions were from his point of view and it was interesting to hear this coming from a man who has witnessed and endured much in his lifetime.

"Dont be afraid to take risks in life" quotes the journalist in his softly yet persuasive tone. From the man who has risked his career, his life and everything that made him what he is today, risk is an old friend and one that has taught him great lesson.

We (the MUN club and other individuals who joined the talk) thank him greatly for doing us the honour of sharing a glimpse of his life. Questions were asked in the end and there was an individual meet as well as a book signing session. Many good opinions, thoughts and inspirations were made during the session.

First day of MUN Club

Our first day of MUN Club was pretty light hearted and we started off with a ice breaking game of 'Whacko' and then later introducing the concepts of the MUN club as well as discussing upcoming topics for discussion.

'Whacko' is an icebreaking game where a group of people sit in a circle, with a person standing in the middle. The person standing in the middle holds a newspaper rolled and must tag the person when their name is called out. However when the person's name is called out, the person can quickly call out another person's name out to save themself from being tagged. And the game goes on. If you are tagged it is your turn to go to the middle and tag others.

After many rounds of calling out people's names, we changed to calling out names of countries instead. This was a bit tough as we had to remember different countries and it was quite easy to forget who was representing which country!
